Writer's picture: tara forshawtara forshaw

Warrior Nun is a Netflix original series released on 2nd July 2020. The action-fantasy show was created by Simon Barry, based upon the character from manga-style canadian comic book Warrior Nun Areala, created by Ben Dunn.

After waking from the dead, an orphan teen realises she possesses super powers. The source of these powers being a halo inplanted into her back by a secret sect of demon-hunting nuns.

Initially, I wasn't expecting great things from this title. It's not something I would be attracted to. However, the programme was an enjoyable watch, with great characters, stunning locations and an interesting and original story.

In terms of the creative production, I was really impressed. The camera work throughout was brilliant, the sound was really well done, with a good choice of music, and probably one of my favourite parts - the locations. Such incredible places, views and buildings we get to see! They also didn't overdo it with the special effects, making the effects really high quality. Overall, the production was really impressive and beyond what anyone could expect.

Characters

The characters are mainly strong, powerful and admirable women, which I adored. There was such great character development also. We were able to see Ava's flaws and witness her growing and becoming more selfless and inspiring with the situations that were thrown her way. We could connect to her from the beginning, as we are able to empathise with her and her struggles, automatically wanting the best for her. She relies a lot on humour which makes the show a little funny but also creates her appealing character.

There are other characters with similar great qualities. As many of them are nuns, their faith is admirable, alongside their physical ability to fight and protect themselves and their sisters. Even the less likable characters have admirable traits such as their intense ambition and honesty.

Science vs Religion

I enjoyed the serious discussion within this programme of science and religion and their fight of power. It represented what both are capable of and how they can work together. It shows the negatives and positives of both groups. The whole discussion is interesting to watch take place, without bias.

My negative comment is that the ending was rather abrupt and felt unfinished. As it was the last episode, I was expecting more of a final battle of some sort. When the battle began, the show ended. I was expecting a little more. At least they made it clear that there would be a second season, although I'm not so sure I'm pleased about that. As I have expressed before, I'm continuing my search for a new programme that has a single season!

I don't want to talk about this show in great detail, as I recommend you watch it. It's nothing like I've ever watched before, in terms of narrative. I feel its originality is fresh and enjoyable. Plot twists, great heroes, villains and everything in between.
